Proud to be moving forward with Seaspan on Tracking Units

Seaspan is a Canadian company with over 130 years of experience in the maritime transportation industry. They own and operate over 30 tugs and over 110 barges. This is a company focused on “building a legacy that will last for centuries”. In addition to tracking assets through regular AIS transmissions, Seaspan will implement ShipTracks barge tracking system on their entire fleet.  This will include integrated tracking and management tools that show barge name, loaded status and product type as well as miles traveled each day. Seaspan and ShipTracks have been testing and developing the system for over a year and this decision is a clear move to strengthen its legacy by providing quality customer service and solid efficiency.

The solar powered tracking units that come with back-up batteries do not require any type of wiring or insulation and transmit data up to every 5 minutes almost anywhere in the world. These are easy to install and then displayed within the ShipTracks web portal.  Seaspan will be able to view its non-AIS carrying assets globally, just as it would through regular ShipTracks web portal tracking.

These units are programmed inhouse before being shipped to Seaspan. Programmed units enable authorized users to view more than the location of the unit. They can display information set to identify:

  • Assets by category. Are they hopper barges? Tankers? etc.
  • Display if the asset if empty or loaded.
  • Type of product being carried
  • Add custom notes for additional information.

Unlike the public nature of AIS transmissions these tracking units’ transmissions are proprietary. Only Seaspan users will see them displayed within the ShipTracks portal, giving the company a new tech edge.
